Description: "Christmas Cottage", is an Edwardian granite cottage, located in a quiet traffic-free Terrace (pedestrian access only), in an elevated position. There are many original features that have been preserved, such as the stained glass, and panelled doors. The Hall contains its original Minton’s Encaustic Tiles. Timber beams are also original and have been stripped and coated with natural beeswax. Although the above features have been retained, the interior of the property is very light and combines modern pieces of furniture within the scheme. Though there is little view from the ground floor, the main bedroom to the front also has a sitting area, together with window seats where the views that can be seen are breathtaking, whatever the season, of Newlyn Harbour, across Mounts Bay to Penzance, St Michael’s Mount, Marazion and the Lizard Peninsula. Seals can often be seen close to the shore. If you are an early riser, you will not be disappointed at the magnificent sunrise observed across Mounts Bay. You can watch the fishing fleet leaving and entering the harbour together with yachts, the Lifeboat, and also the Scillonian ferry crossing the bay, bound for the Isles of Scilly, as well as the many ships that anchor offshore. Cornish 'gigs' can be seen practicing for the races. The cottage sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms as follows - 1 double = 2persons, 1 bunk-bed = 2persons. There is also space for 1 baby in a travel-cot, which can be supplied, (providing you book this in advance). (No bedding supplied for cot). Christmas Cottage can be booked throughout the year, and is the very best in Cornish luxury accommodation, whatever the season. An ideal location for either the experienced or novice Marine artist, or those who favour the composition of the rugged Cornish landscape! Equally, artists of all abilities will be unable to resist sketching or painting the magnificent views, or the dramatic sunrise. The area is inspirational for writers and poets. Location: The village of Newlyn is situated approximately a five minute drive away from Penzance. Penzance has a range of large and small shops, main rail station, together with the Ferry Port and Heliport for excursions to the Isles of Scilly. Penzance also has its own open air pool. Newlyn itself is a quaint but bustling fishing port (and home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the country). There are galleries, cafes, restaurants and a variety of pubs. The nearest pub to Christmas Cottage is the Fisherman's Arms a few minutes walk away, where you will be assured of a warm welcome.Excellent fish and seafood are available locally from the fishermen or fish market. There is a small supermarket, butchers, florists, bakers, green-grocers, pharmacy, and an old fashioned Hardware store, together with a newsagent, gift shops and a Post Office. Along the coast a short distance is Mousehole, yet another picturesque village and harbour. Although there are many pleasant coastal walks, the bus service operates regularly and there is also an excellent taxi service. Land's End is a short drive away as are Marazion and Heligan Gardens. The Eden Project and the Tate Gallery St Ives are a little further away. Nearby are sandy beaches for children to play and dig, and also for windsurfers and surfers. Scuba diving trips leave from Penzance and Newlyn. Entertainment in the summer can be enjoyed at the Minack Open Air Theatre at Porthcurno, an excellent way to spend an evening, with the backdrop of the sea. The annual Newlyn Fish Festival is an interesting and colourful event, and prior to Christmas and through to the New Year, Newlyn, and the neighbouring Mousehole enjoy spectacular Christmas Lights. |
