Birkhow

Description: Birkhow is the perfect starting place for setting out to explore the Lake District's fells and countryside ... and an even better place to come back to after being out all day. The cottage is beautiful throughout and has one double room and two twins. The kitchen is fully equipped and the sitting room is large and light with a cosy open fire for those winter evenings. There is a separate dining room with a wood burning stove. The garden has a patio area for barbeques and outdoor eating. Eskdale's village shop is just five minutes walk away and there are two pubs 15 minutes walk from the door. It is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk. Pets are welcome but I'm afraid we can only accept one dog per booking (unless by prior consent). We charge £15 per dog to cover additional cleaning costs.

Location: Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house! The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and for fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains leisurely making the seven mile journey down to the sea - Irton Road station is just ten mins walk from Birkhow Cottage. There are five pubs in the valley (the Bower House Inn is just a ten minute walk away), all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food. The village shop and post office is just a five minute walk from Birkhow and sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers, as well as outdoor clothes and equipment.
