Location: Higher North Mill and the surrounding stone built Watermill Cottages stand alone in a secluded, partly wooded valley on the banks of the river Gara, just over a mile inland from Start Bay between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge.
The typical steep sided Devon valley remains virtually untouched by modern intervention. And, with practically no passing traffic, it is a peaceful haven full of wild flowers and animals. There are lots of walks for people and dogs to enjoy in and around the valley, plenty of wood and wetland birds to observe and small brown trout to fish for.
For children, this area offers a freedom rare to find in today's world. Described rather apply by on mother as Enid Blyton country, there's a traffic-free valley to explore, woods to play in and the river to dam and race boats on. As the river rarely runs at more than knee height, children can paddle safely. There are eggs to collect and in the spring there may be lambs to bottle-feed.
