County Down: Ballycopeland Windmill is the only windmill in County Down still in working order, although there are dozens of ruined ones. In the miller's house and the kiln house, you can see how things worked and try your hand at milling. Find the cockananny! An 18th century mansion with opposing facades in different styles, the west front is classical, the east front gothic, reflecting the divergence in the taste of the owner and his wife. There is a Victorian laundry and pastime centre, as well as a sawmill and cornmill, driven by water. The mansion is set in a magnificent 700 acre estate running down to the shores of Strangford Lough. This summer-only attraction consists of a delightful pair of 17th century cottages close to the water's edge in Groomsport. One is now a modernized tourist office with crafts for sale, the other (which is thatched - a rarity in North Down) is furnished in the style of 1910 with turf fire burning. Regular weekend craft demonstrations. For Accommodation please click on the Globes below. |
