Curlew Cottage

Description: The cottage sleeps four, in two bedrooms - one double, one twin. Duvets and blankets are provided. For a baby, a high chair and travel cot are available at no extra charge (cot blankets and cot linen are not provided). We also have a folding 'Z-bed' which is suitable for an additional child. The cottage is equipped and furnished to a high modern standard with fitted carpets and double glazing throughout and with loft insulation. Heating is by electric storage radiators and panel heaters (total heating control) with also a radiant electric fire in the lounge. Water is heated by an electric immersion heater. Electricity is provided free of charge (except in Winter when the first £25 is free and extra is charged at unit costs). The spacious dining room includes a piano and a small selection of music! There is also a radio. A telephone is providedd for outgoing as well as incoming calls. The lounge has a colour television and video recorder, a three-piece suite and a coal-effect electric fire. A wide selection of books and other information about the area is provided. Both the dining room and lounge command superb views, especially the lounge which has a large picture window where you can sit in comfort looking right out across the county to the far flow-country skyline. Garden birds including greenfinches, robins, tits, blackbirds and sparrows visit the bird-table in front of the lounge window. The kitchen contains a ceramic hob cooker, microwave oven, fridge-freezer, automatic washing machine, automatic dishwasher and tumble drier. The bathroom has WC, washbasin and bath with over-bath shower. There is a heated towel rail and a convector heater. A hair-dryer is provided. The garden is very attractive with ample space to sit out and for children to play. The drive has parking space for two cars. A lockable garden shed is provided for storing items such as bikes and waders. Pets regrettably cannot be accepted as the cottage is surrounded by farmland in which sheep and cattle graze. Linen with towels are provided if required at an extra charge of £7-00 per person. Walkers and Cyclists are very welcome. No smoking please. Curlew Cottage is accredited with Disabled Access category 3; it is suitable for the mobility impaired.

Location: Guests are always delighted with the comfortable, well-equipped cottage which is an excellent centre for exploring the Far North and for day trips to Orkney. The cottage is four miles (ten minutes drive) from Thurso, 20 miles from John O Groats and 15 miles from the Castle of Mey. The sands of Dunnet Bay and the cliffs of Dunnet Head, mainland Britain's most northerly point, are near. Unspoilt Highland landscapes, sandy beaches, ancient cairns, three golf-courses, salmon and trout fishing are all nearby. The area is rich in wildlife; seals, otters and deer are common. A very wide range of birds can be seen including ospreys and many raptors, larks sing and snipe drum overhead while the sea-bird city of Duncansby Head is just 30 minutes drive away. There, and at Dunnet Head, you may see puffins as well as kittiwakes, guillimots, fulmars and skuas. In July over 100 different wild flowers including Scottish primrose can be found in bloom within a few miles. Just along the road is a 30-acre wood, rich in orchids and birds, which is owned by Curlew Cottage and in which guests are welcome to walk.
