Powys: Most visitors to Powys, a large sparsely populated county in south Wales, head straight for the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) which covers over 500 square miles of grass-topped mountain peaks including 4 mountain ranges. Pen-y-Fan is the highest point in southern Britain at almost 3000 feet and, although not as dramatic as the mountains of Snowdonia in northwest Wales, the Brecon Beacons have their own beauty; rolling like huge green waves over the countryside. West of the Brecon Beacons is Fforet Fawr and the Black Mountain and to the east lie the Black Mountains (plural). To the south there are a number of impressive waterfalls, the most attractive being Sgwd-yr-eira (the spout of snow). Running through the park are 2 long paths - Offa's Dyke Path and the Taff Trail. For those not wishing to walk, the Welsh National Cycle Route runs through the Brecon Beacons National Park along the quieter roads and pony trekking is available.
