Description:
Towards the west end of the village Mel Beck springs from a rocky outcrop to flow down over small cascades to pass through the village and join with Goodman’s Gill before racing to the river Cover. The Old Post Office stands close to Mel Beck and the path that winds beside it upwards, toward the moors and Penhill. Entry at the front is to a hallway and to the left is a spacious lounge with open stonework, exposed beam ceiling and stone fireplace with flagged hearth and wood burning stove. To the right is a dining room with decorative cornice and stone fireplace with flagged hearth and wood burning stove. Also to the right at the end of the hallway is a beautifully fitted and well equipped kitchen which overlooks the rear garden and adjacent field. Another short hallway leads from the kitchen to a utility room with adjoining wash basin and toilet. Two external doors lead from the utility area, one to a rear garden and the other to a small yard with a further door leading to a car parking area beside the cottage. A stairway rises from the hallway to a half landing providing access to a bathroom with bath, shower, washbasin and toilet. The stairway then rises a further five steps to another landing serving a large bedroom with king size bed and en-suite shower room with washbasin and toilet, a double bedroom and two twin bedrooms. This is large, comfortable family home with lots of space and bright with natural light in the larger rooms. A home with plenty of character and original features, tastefully decorated and furnished to provide a very high standard of accommodation. Strictly non smoking. One small well behaved dog welcome, £10 extra.
Location:
The village sits on the lower reaches of Penhill facing south over the dale though high enough to command views throughout Coverdale and directly across the valley towards West Scrafton and the distant crags of Roova that break the southern skyline. Carlton is the principal village in this hidden dale and referred to locally as Carlton Town which perhaps reflects it status and ambitions over many generations. There are three ancient mounds near the village, two Bronze Age barrows, or burial mounds and one motte, or castle, dating from the 11th Century confirming its ancient beginnings. The Ancient Order of Foresters still exists as a Friendly Society and takes to the streets in full regalia during June of each year to march through the village and enjoy a day of celebration and thanksgiving mixed with fun and games for young and old. A long straggling village following the undulating escarpment for over a mile with many bridleways and paths leave the village to link into Walden, Wensleydale and to farms and hamlets spread across Coverdale. Less than a generation ago the village boasted two public houses, three general stores, a petrol station, a cobbler, blacksmith and two joiners workshops but now only the Foresters Arms remains. A village changing to modern ways but still full of character and charming Dale’s folk.
