Description:
The building is on 3 floors. Starting on the ground floor,we have:
LARGE LOUNGE/ DINING AREA with log fire, solid maple floor and pine panelling. There is an excellent sound system (bring some CD's with you!), and of course all the windows have fabulous panoramic views of the mainland. There is a small library and loads of games, jigsaws etc.. The centrally sited fireplace divides the lounge area from the dining area, and the whole room has proved extremely versatile for the various study groups, school and university parties, and other special interest groups that have used the building. For the various study groups that come here we have an overhead projector, flipcharts, whiteboads and video player. Behind the lounge there is a small LABORATORY, with bench space for 8, containing a microscope and other field equipment. We are slowly building up a display of Geological specimens found by visitors. The KITCHEN is superbly equipped with a large gas cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, blender etc. There is a serving hatch through to the dining area, and a separate pantry with loads of shelving. The ENTRANCE LOBBY has ample coat hanging and shoe space and in wet weather it is kept toasting hot by the 'dump' heaters from our hydro-electric plant - see the 'Electricity' page. There is a LAUNDRY ROOM with a commercial sized washing machine and tumble dryer (both coin operated), a shower and 2 toilets (one equipped for disabled people). We also have a payphone.
Moving up to the first floor, there are four BEDROOMS of various sizes - one twin bedded room, one triple (1 bunk, 1 single), one 5 bedded (2 bunks, 1 single), and one with 8 beds in 4 bunks. Each has its one wash basin, and down the rear corridor are 2 showers and 2 toilets. The top floor has two BEDROOMS, each with 3 single beds. There is another shower and toilet on this floor. There is full central heating in the building, and plenty of hot water. That completes our short tour of the building.
Location:
Travelling to Eigg involves a ferry journey from either Mallaig or Arisaig, which if you are coming by train lie at the end of one of the most scenic railway journeys in the country - the famous West Coast line. The station in Mallaig is just a couple of hundred metres from the ferry, and in Arisaig it is about 3/4 mile up the hill. The timetables for both ferries and the train are set out in the linked page above. The sea journey is about an hour from either port, and if the weather is fair there is an excellent chance of seeing whales, basking sharks, dolphins or porpoises. The Arisaig vessel will always alter course to get close to sightings, and it is an unusual day that they see nothing.
