Grange Cottage

Description:

At the top of the lower market place is Middleham Grange, a large and beautifully proportioned Georgian dwelling with a private entrance and large carriage driveway with parking area. To the left of the house is a formal walled garden with raised borders, a pleasant and tranquil place to sit and enjoy the colour and fragrance of beautiful blooms. Snuggled to the right of the main house is Grange Cottage, thought to be the former housekeepers cottage. Access is from the main driveway, through gated railings, to a smaller gravelled courtyard with a flagged patio area, seating and potted plants. Entry is to a cosy dining area and adjoining fitted kitchen that is spacious, well equipped and includes an Esse (Aga) range for cooking. The dining room leads to an inner hall with central stairway, and then to a comfortable but roomy lounge with impressive stone fireplace and hearth housing a small multi fuel stove. The stairway rises to a large landing serving a bedroom with king size bed to the front of the cottage, a bedroom to the rear with super king bed which can be used as singles if preferred, and a bathroom with bath, shower, washbasin and toilet between the two rooms. The cottage is spacious beyond its exterior proportions and has been refurbished with period style and elegance befitting the architectural flamboyance of its castellated façade. All the rooms are beautifully co-ordinated with soothing colour in their furnishings and fittings and include period antiques and artwork. The lounge and rear bedroom both view out over the beautiful and tranquil garden of the main house, a joy to behold at any time of year. Sorry, short breaks not available at this cottage. Duvets and pillows are provided with linen and towels included in the rent. Oil-fired central heating, small supply of logs and electricity all included. Electric blanket. Location:

Where the steep flanks of the dominant Penhill, separating Wensleydale and Coverdale, gently recede towards the convergence of the rivers Ure and Cover the high fells of Wensleydale are left behind but the southern hillsides of Coverdale continue towards Witton Fell. Here, as the valleys merge, sheltered from the prevailing westerly weather on the lowest reaches of Penhill sits Middleham. The ancient sentinel protecting the once important Pennine crossing to Skipton and Lancashire. There are two cobbled market places, each with a stone cross, bordered by impressive houses, large and small, many of them built with pilfered stone from the castle. In latter years the village has been extended along the hillsides in contemporary guise but still holds its serenity and history. No longer a sentry guarding but now a major centre for breeding and training racehorses. This equestrian association and dependence is reflected in the names of shops, cafes and restaurants and so evident each day as the strings of horses pass through the market places to go and return from their training gallops on the nearby moors.
