Description:
At the sleepy end of a peaceful village stands Brown's House, once a dales farm cottage and adjacent barn, now a stunning home with all that is required for comfortable living and family relaxation. Entry is to a small hallway which opens to a large, well fitted country kitchen with tiled floor, beamed ceiling and a large central island unit incorporating a gas hob. There is also a Rayburn stove inset into the original sandstone fireplace and a large dining table with ample space for family meals. At one corner of the kitchen is a small pantry with flagged floor and stone shelves. To one side of the kitchen is a comfortable lounge with beamed ceiling and dressed stone fireplace with multi-fuel stove and flagged hearth. To the other side is a hallway giving access to the rear garden and to a second lounge with large arched window, tiled floor and a brick lined, corner fireplace with multi-fuel stove and flagged hearth. A spiral stairway rises from the front hallway to a landing which serves three bedrooms and a bathroom. There is a double room with en-suite shower room including washbasin and toilet, a twin room with a similar en-suite shower room and a further twin room adjacent to the bathroom which has a lofted ceiling with exposed purlins and rafters and a brick arched, corner fireplace. The large, private garden to the rear of the house is terraced with limestone and has formal beds, borders and a lawn. The house is spacious yet cosy and contains many features from the original dales farmhouse such as mullion windows, beamed ceilings, ledged pine doors and dressed stone fireplaces. The restoration and conversion has been skilfully designed and meticulously carried out with a high quality of workmanship to provide a delightful home offering an excellent standard of accommodation to be enjoyed by any family and friends on holiday in these wonderful dales.
Location:
In lower Bishopdale where the glacial moraine and drumlins cause small undulations in the landscape the village of Newbiggin nestles close to the valley floor on the south side of the dale. The village is peaceful, long and linear with the houses intermittent about a narrow street that is linked to the B6160 by a minor road and small lane but has no through traffic. Although Newbiggin means ‘New Buildings’ the term is relative since here are some of the finest examples of 17th century dwellings in the dales.
